Dark psychology: How to analyse people by James William
Psychology is a very great subject to study either for interest or for information, it involves the study of human behaviour and their mental pattern.
Dark psychology is a more evolved version of psychology, it involves the study of weakness of psychology and more darker aspects of human behaviour.
Dark psychology tells us how persuasion works how criminals actually manipulates people and more of the negative side of the humans.
Using dark psychology on people is a very dangerous way to get any work done by manipulating them,
not using it is a good thing but knowing Dark psychology is very important so that you don't get manipulated by anyone.
This book will teach us the Dark Secrets to Analyze and Influence Anyone Using Body Language, Human Psychology, Subliminal Persuasion and NLP.
Body language
One of the easiest way to analyze someone is to look over their body language.
People may control their body language but not for a long time,
after some time the body reacts unconsciously according to what is going in the mind of a person.
So by analyzing people's body language, you may predict a person's thoughts.
Eye contact
It is the most common nowadays to predict that someone is confident in talking or not by simpy observing if they are making eye contact with others or not.
Making eye contact shows a person that you are giving them your full attention and not getting distracted by anyone else and you are genuinely interested in them.
However making too much of eye contact can make a person uncomfortable so try to avoid staring in someone's eyes for so long.
Pupil dilation is also a thing which shows that a person is interested in what you are saying.
Shifty eyes on the other hand indicates that either the person is lying to you or he is not confident in his own idea or he is not inerested in you anymore.
Mouth movement
Someone with tight or pursed lips might be trying to concentrate, or they also might be trying hard to hide a sour face.
If the corners of someone's eyes are not ceased then there is a possibility that they are faking their smile.
It does not necessarily means that someone is evil, the person may was thinking about something else.
A person if covering their mouth continuously again and again, then he may be nervous about something.
He will bite his lips or fingers or cover his mouth with his hand or fist in order to secure himself from any kind of upcoming danger (verbal, emotional or psychological)
Nodding
If someone is rapidly nodding while you are listening, this may means that the person wants to finish the conversation soon and giving you an indirect message to speak faster or it may happen that he is too excited to resist his excitement until you finish talking.
Someone who is tilting their head to the side shows that may be the person is interested in your talking and wanted to give their full attention and want to hear you clearly.
If someone is nodding too artificially then surely they are lacking their interest in your idea.
Mimicing someone's head movement in a limit shows that you are empathetic to them and you are comprehending to what they are saying, it may be a gentle tilt of your head or something else.
Hands and arms
The more a person covers his chest and front upper body by his arms or hands snows that he is not open to you,
he cannot entirely rely upon you for his work and also that he is feeling insecure in talking to you.
And it does not always means that they are underconfident or insecure, sometimes the person may tries to relax himself by loosely folding his hands in the front, you have to observe them carefully either they are doing it roughly or casually.
The usage of hands and arms in conversation more often can be a great way to make someone trust you and it shows that you are clear about your idea and you are confident about it.
When starting any type of conversation, do not start it by clearing your throat or from the words "um" or "uh", it only shows to another person that you are not sure about what you are going to say, it may disinterest the other person and he wants to finish the conversation as soon as possible.
During any conversation it is important that both the person say equally neither you have to be dominant nor you have to let the other person speak the whole time.
If someone is talking from a long time and you want to say something then you can say some phrases such as:
"can i just say....", "could I speak for a minute?” or “I’m listening but can I say something really quick?”
Sometimes it may be hard to tell these phrases to people so you can tell them that you want to speak by your body language.
Put your hands on your hips or tilt your head so that the other person may think that you want to say something, try leaning on them in order to make your move.
People who opens their arms while doing any conversation, then indirectly they show to people that they are open minded.
And it is also said that people who use their hands in a conversation are tend to have a better memory than who does not.
You can actually know a person's intentions by listening to how they talk and how is their body language at that time, what is the mood of a person, etc.
One of the best way of practicing how to observe people is by watching a movie or T.V. serial in a language which you do not understand.
Try observing and predicting the behaviour of people by watching their body language, their tone of talking, their facial expressions, etc.
Sometimes you can analyse what a person is saying by figuring out the type of noises they are making rather than listening to their words.
“This is important,” “you need to know,” “let me explain,” these are some of the examples of some phrases which insatntly attracts the attention of the people to whom you are talking.
Sometimes these phrases can be said without any words such as raising your voice while talking about a specific topic, repeating a word several time during the conversation, or pausing for a moment so that the listener can evaluate what did you just said to him, etc.
If you somehow managed to find out the words in which someone is emphasizing too much then you just discovered in which topic a person is interested in without asking them about it.
And then you can use that information to either impress that person or to know them more clearly.
“First, second, third,” “to summarize,” “the topic is,” are all organisational cues which tells that the person is trying to organize his thoughts, may be he is putting emphasis on the things that are the most important.
Organisational cues could just be someone clearing their throat, redirecting the conversation back to a previous topic, or stopping in order for everyone to collect their thoughts.
Organisational cues helps in winning in arguments by taking people to your side.
The pitch of your voice also plays a major role while talking, try to always keep your pitch under your complete control.
While talking, you do not have to talk about yourself too much, to analyse people carefully, you have to direct your focus to their words and their body language.
So you have to encourage a person to talk about himself more.
If you want to give any type of advice to someone, then instead of using "you", you can use "we", such as "We must have to exercise to stay fit".
Using "we" instead of "you" helps the person to be more receptive to your advice.
Apologizing on the topic where you really have a mistake makes you more vulnerable and humiliative but too much of it makes people distrust you.
And if urges emerges from you to say "sorry", then instead of saying "sorry", you can try saying "thank you".
People will generally respond much more positively to a thankful person than someone that always invalidates themselves.
Such as instead of saying "“Sorry you had to listen to me rant!”, you can try saying "“Thank you for being such a great listener. I’m glad to have a friend like you!”
Keeping your body open and visible is crucial in letting others know they can trust you.
Step around a chair or table that’s blocking you from making a full connection in a conversation.
This also shows that you are interested in talking and also confident in your words.
Smiling is such a great gift given to humans which can turn any situation from worst to the best.
Studies have shown that people smile when someone else is smiling to them which at the end leaves them with a good mood.
People seems to be more open and receptive to those who present themselves as a vulnerable person.
We all are humans and we cannot be perfect for everyone at the same time so rather than living to be perfect for people, one must accept his/her insecurities and rather than hiding them,
they must be shown to people as they are, as no one likes to feel inferior and showing that you are perfect shows the other person that he/she is inferior to you and hence it will result in short talkings.
However, excess of everything is bad.
Asking for help is another great way to connect with people, it shows to people that you are human too and you too needs help sometimes.
Another thing you do when asking for help is that you offer the other person a chance to show his/her kindness and open mindedness of thoughts.
It must be noted that you do not have to put someone in an uncomfortable situation by asking for too much favour, it will result in frustation and anger to the person.
Another way to persuade someone is by asking them for more than you actually need.
Like if you want to go to a picnic with your family and you want your friend's truck then rahter than asking your friend to help in packing your stuff, you can directly ask them if he will be kind enough to borrow you his truck for a week.
When you ask for a bigger help then people are used to deny less on your first request.
To effectively analyse and persuade someone, one must develop good relationships with people, as very fewer people can do any kind of favour on someone to whom they are unknown.
Letting someone know that they are not alone, can be the best way to make a good connection with that person.
A person's name sounds the sweetest in any language and also a person is attracted more to those people who use their name which makes them feel important.
To make people feel comfortable, you can mirror or copy their behaviour to some extent.
Such as talking energetically to the person who is a crazy ball of energy in himself, talking in low pitch and empathetically with a person who is going through a hard time which is reflecting in his body language and behaviour.
Giving genuine compliments to people helps in forming a better picture of yourself in their minds, but it must be taken care that the compliments you are giving must be genuine so that the other person does not feel like you are faking.
Flattery doesn't only limited to someone's appearance but it may be as simple as picking their favourite food to prepare, doing something which is very close to their heart.
You, because, free, and instantly, these are the most powerful words in the English language.
"You", is an important word because people love hearing about themselves.
"Because", is an important word because many people are looking for an explaination.
Humans are obssessed with labels, and most people wants to know the reason behind that.
"Free", is an important word because you may hypnotise someone by using the word "free" in appropriate time, and also most peple desire freedom and independence and so they like to hear the word "free" frequently.
"Instantly", is an important word because many people are obssessed with time.
And people would love to hear that if something they will get instantly.
These words are important to include in someone vocabulary whether you want to persuade somene or not.
It is crucial to notice the words you use as well as what others are using because sometimes not everything that is said is exactly what it means.
Here are three psychological thoeries given by the author which will be helpful in making connection and persuading someone in certain scenerio.
Priming
This involves setting up conversation and action for future preparation.
It includes slipping words, images and ideas in conversatoin before confronting the actual thing.
It is used for people who don't like surprises or those who aren't willing to change.
This technique can be manipulative if not used for good reason.
Like if a lady wants a baby but she is not sure about her husband and if they have a very delicate connection which the lady doesn't want to break.
So, instead of directly asking her husband about baby, she will let him see the pictures of baby, she will talk about the benefits of having a baby, she will force her husband to go to the baby section in any mall with her and then if she proposes her idea of having a baby then chances are higher that her husband will agree with her.
Amplification hypothesis
It involvess hightening the excitement or negativity surrounding a certain subject.
This technique involves taking a idea, item or subject and gassing it up and making it seem more exciting and amplifying it to the next level.
Like in the above example, the lady can talk about the baby of her friends with her husband, she wil drove the attentoin of her husband towards the adorable faces the baby is making and how perfect the baby was.
This method is true but it isn't always the best option.
Sometimes it is better to be honest and just have a normal conversatoin with the person without any hidden meaning.
This process is effective for those who are unable to discuss things as openly as it used to be.
The scarcity effect
This is the idea that where there is less of something, it becomes more desirable.
Most commonly it is used in sales but it is equally effective in real life.
To persuade someone, limiting the availability of an option can help people sway quicker.
It can be understood as if there are two jars of cookies.
One which is completely filled and another one which is about to finish up completely.
Then people will go more towards the jar which has less cookies thinking that it may have better taste thatswhy people ate only those cookies, even though the cookies in both the jars are same.
Subliminal persuasion
The idea of subliminal persuasion involves convincing someone to do a thing which is below their conscious level.
Under this you can try to persuade someone without even realising him/her about being persuaded.
But the most important thing is that you have to do all this for a good and wise reason becaue by doing it an unethical reason, you can completely ruin someone's life.
Subliminal persuasion should be used for something helpful and good such as if you are too fearful to tell someone how you feel about them to say the balant truth, you can use the subliminal persuasion to convey your feeling.
The trick to subliminally persuade someone is to show as much confidence as you can alongwith the vulnerability.
Confidence is also important so that you can distract the person from realising that they are being presuaded.
Another important thing in persuasion is that you must have to be clear about what you want and so you do not have to use those words which makes the other person difficult to understand.
You have to convince the other person not to confuse him by jumbling confusing words.
You have to decide what your actual goal is and so you have to frame the converation accordingly.
Although it may seem hard but you have to use positive words and sentences while persuading someone.
You do not have to give someone the option to avoid conversation and so you have to ask them questions which will be answered in yes, no or very minimum words.
Also you have to ask questions which will increase the chances of yes in the conversation.
If you can plan what you want to gain from a specific interaction, you can include hints to that in the beginning of the conversation.
This is an important way to prime as well as lay the framework for whatever your argument might be.
If you feel like the conversation is not heading towards where you want it should be, then you have to take a little break from the conversatin such as bathroom break.
Firstly it will help in forming new ideas of how you can get the conversation on your side and secondly the other person can get some free time alone so that he can think and decide what he has to do.
You have to make the other person visualize how good the things will be in the near future if they follow your advice.
While talking you have to snatch away the option "no" from the person by forming such sentences.
Such as instead of asking “Do you want to go out to dinner tonight?", you can ask “Where are we going to dinner tonight?”.
By doing so you increase the chances of that person saying yes and ultimately to the completion of your desired goal.
This book has provided you the basic knowledge of what persuasion is and what is dark psychology so that you can analyse the behaviour of people and then act accordingly towards your desired goal.
